INDEPENDENCE IS THE TOP RANKED CONSTITUTIONAL OPTION FOR SCOTS
New polling information has found that Independence is the top ranked constitutional option for most Scots.
The new poll was conducted by Survation for Progress Scotland and surveyed 3016 Scots, from 1st – 15th November 2024.
OVER THAN HALF OF SCOTS BELIEVE NATIONAL INSURANCE SHOULD BE DEVOLVED
According to the figures in the poll, the favoured number one option for people in Scotland was independence in the European Union with 34% support. A further 8% support independence outside the EU as their number one constitutional option, making a total of 42% support for independence.
In contrast only 39% support not changing or reversing the current constitutional position - 22% for the status quo and 17% for abolishing the Scottish Parliament.
In total, 61% of Scots support some level of greater constitutional change - an option not offered by the Westminster parties.
The polling, conducted after the first budget of the new UK government, also shows that over half of the respondents (51%) indicated that they believe the Scottish Government should have responsibility for setting the National Insurance Contribution rates and thresholds.
Separately, the poll also found the Scottish National Party ahead in voters intentions for Westminster, Holyrood Constituency and Holyrood List whilst the Labour party saw a drop in support across all three measures (Labour drop 3 points at Westminster, 4 on the Holyrood Constituency and 1 point on the List).
A spokesperson for Progress Scotland said:
“This new polling provides a significant insight into the constitutional and political opinions of people in Scotland.
“There should be much for political parties to consider about how their policies and plans reflect the fact that 61% of Scots support some level of greater constitutional change - whether that is regarding Scottish Independence or membership of the European Union.
“Interestingly, our polling indicates 51% of Scots believe that responsibility over National Insurance Contribution rates and thresholds should be the responsibility of the Scottish Government.
“This extensive poll also found the Labour party losing support across for Westminster, Holyrood Constituency and Holyrood List elections - down 3 points at Westminster, down 4 on the Holyrood Constituency and down 1 point on the List.
“The Scottish National Party is currently leading on voters intentions across all three measures. “The findings of our poll give a fascinating insight into Scottish public attitudes towards support for further devolution to the Scottish Parliament and voters intension in Scotland.”
